The Endangered Wildlife Trust says so far 209 rhinos have been poached.
Carcasses of four white rhinos and one black rhino were discovered yesterday at the Pilanesburg Nature Reserve in the North West. According to the Captain Adele Myburgh, from the North West Police, the carcasses were discovered during a helicopter “routine check”. “One of the game lodgers did a count of all the game in the reserve. Police were called in and they are busy conducting their investigations,” she says.
Myburgh says that no arrests were made.
Faan Coetzee of the Endagered Wildlife Trust Fund says this incident brings the total number of rhinos poached since January this year to 209. “We suspect that the poachers could be local people or people from Zimbabwe, because we have arrested a lot of people from Zimbabwe.”
